Built in 1750, this casual but elegant inn is one of the oldest historic homes operating as a bed and breakfast on the Cape. It is the perfect place for relaxing and renewing retreats or romantic getaways.
Listed on the National Registry of Historical Places, the Inn stands in Town Hall Square in the heart of Sandwich, the Cape's oldest and most quaint village. The home was built by one of the town's founding fathers, Jonathan Bassett, whose only daughter, Deliverance, was married to Elisha Hall in 1768. It remained in the Hall family until 1929. Hall family members participated in, and contributed to, the growth of the Village. They watched the ups and downs of the community from before the Revolutionary War until the Great Depression.
The Inn has five beautifully restored, pristine guest rooms with private en-suite baths. Each is uniquely decorated to evoke the ambiance of a seaside cottage while maintaining the architectural and historical character of this lovely home.
Guests are invited to relax in the Inn’s parlor where they can enjoy the company of other guests or sip a glass of wine and read a good book. If you didn't bring a book, you are welcome to borrow one from the Inn's collection. Be sure to ask the Innkeepers about the book exchange.
The Inn's Keeping Room is where guests gather in the morning for a hearty and delicious gourmet breakfast to start their day. On chilly fall and winter mornings, you will enjoy dining by the warmth of the fire in the fireplace where all of the meals were once prepared. The fireplace is built of handmade bricks and contains the original beehive oven. Ask Charlie to give you a look inside. He will even explain how the oven was used in Colonial times.
Start your day with a healthy, hearty, and delicious breakfast served each morning in the Keeping Room or outdoors on the Inn's sun-drenched patio. We strive to provide our guests with a healthy and delicious breakfast; one that is low in fat but robust with flavor. Daily breakfast selection is "chef's choice" but with advanced notice most dietary needs can be accommodated.
Inn specialties include pumpkin-cranbran muffins, cinnamon raisin scones, cheddar-dill scones, baked eggs, eggs in a ham basket with herbed tomatoes and potato gratin, and whole grain-blueberry pancakes. A typical breakfast consists of seasonal fresh fruit compote, home-baked fruit breads, muffins or scones, an egg dish, juice, Starbucks coffee and assorted fine teas. For guests who are day-tripping to Nantucket on the early ferry, we provide a wonderful take-along breakfast bag you can enjoy on the 55-minute trip to the island.
Fresh-baked goodies and early evening wine will be waiting for you when you return to the Inn in the afternoon. Charlie selects a nice red wine and a delicious white wine from his cellar for our guests to enjoy as they peruse local restaurant menus in search of just the right place for dinner. When you return from enjoying some wonderful local cuisine, you can end your day with a snifter of brandy, port, or sherry before you retire to the lovely guest room we have prepared for you with your private bath, luxurious Egyptian cotton linens, and soft cotton robes.
As innkeepers, one of our great joys is meeting and getting to know the wonderful folks who come to stay at our Inn. We hope to get to know you very soon.
